History of Burnsville, North Carolina

After the formation of Yancey County John Bailey then donated the land for the Town of Burnsville with the request that the town is named in honor of Captain Otway Burns. Burnsville Town Hall was originally built in 1908 on the southwest corner of the Town Square to serve as the County Courthouse for Yancey County. Otway Burns (c. 1775 – August 25, 1850) was an American privateer during the War of 1812 and later, a North Carolina State Senator. Otway Burns 1775-1850 was born on Queen Creek, Onslow County, NC and died October 25, 1850, on Portsmouth Island, Carteret County, NC.  1820, Captain Otway Burns – Beaufort, Carteret County – 20 persons in his household, including 16 slaves. Another interesting fact about Burnsville NC is that it used to be a dry county, which means that you could not purchase or sell alcohol. In 2010 the town voted to allow alcohol. Given that alcohol was banned for so long this tells us that this is a small town, most small towns tend to lean this way and it takes quite some time to get up to speed with the other surrounding towns.
