Green Mountain is a small community located in Yancey County, North Carolina. With a population of less than 400 people, Green Mountain is full of open space, which is perfect for hikers, bike riders, horseback riders, and nature lovers. In addition to being surrounded by lush forests, Green Meadow, NC also has the larger North Toe River flowing through it, which is rich in trout, smallmouth bass, and musky, which is perfect for fishermen who enjoy fly fishing. Another major benefit to living near the North Toe River is canoeing, kayaking, tubing, and whitewater rafting.

With all Green Mountain has to offer, it’s a perfect mountain community to move to for both first-time homeowners and second home buyers looking to purchase real estate in North Carolina’s Appalachia. It’s also one of the most affordable communities to live in with median home prices being below the national average at $116,000. With affordable home prices, it’s far from surprising that more than 80% of Green Mountain residents own their homes and you can be one of them.

Of course, before planning a move to Green Mountain, it makes sense to learn more about the community than just the obvious tourist attractions and hotspots. So what else is there to know about Green Mountain? Let’s start by addressing the most commonly asked questions about Green Mountain.

Is Green Mountain, North Carolina Safe?

One of the best things about purchasing real estate in Green Mountain, NC is that it is one of the safest communities to live in. With a crime rate of only 22 per 1,000 people (both residents and visitors alike) during a single calendar year, that is well below the national average. Green Mountain similarly ranks very low on major crimes such as assault, robbery, theft, rape, and murder.

Within a single calendar year, total violent crime tends to amount to only 2 per year, with total property crime amounting to only 15 and other total crimes amounting to 5. In a population of just under 400 people, those numbers are significantly lower than half of Green Mountain’s total residents, making crime an incredibly rare occurrence. This is especially true when compared to other similarly populated towns, even within North Carolina.

What Is There to do In Green Mountain, North Carolina?

One of those is the aforementioned North Toe River, which is a hotspot for fishermen, kayakers, whitewater rafters, and more. Some of the main activities at Little Switzerland include the Diamondback Trail and Murder Mountain Run, the Geneva Hall, the Grassy Creek Waterfall Trail, Crabtree Falls, and Wiseman’s View.

Within Little Switzerland is Emerald Village, which is the main hot spot for mining. With 12 real historic mines, visitors can collect minerals, gems, and even pan for gold.
